Cliff was delighted when he and Peril saved the day together. He sang a song to her, which he named We the Dragons of the Sky, and seemed to enjoy talking to her. Cliff did not show much fear towards her, instead seeming to enjoy her company. Though she was at first his captor, Peril and Cliff seem to have a friendly relationship. However, Cliff is not directly named in the novel. Ruby sighs, retrieves the key from the wall, and gives it to her son, who then happily places it in Leaf's hands before following his mother out of the kitchen, leaving Leaf bewildered.
When Ruby hears the singing and comes over to investigate, Cliff excitedly points to Leaf and apparently asks her for the key. Cliff attempts to play with Leaf and starts singing when Leaf asks him for a key to open the kitchen grate. When Leaf goes back to the kitchen in the SkyWing palace after the dragonets of destiny escape, he encounters Cliff playing underneath a table. Peril laughed and called him a "bloodthirsty little barbarian." Afterward, Ruby was very thankful to Peril for protecting Cliff, wondering what would have happened if he had firescales, and therefore forgave Peril for killing many dragons in Scarlet's arena, allowing her back in the Sky Kingdom. Later, Peril promised to protect him if anything happened to Ruby during the challenge against Scarlet, in which he shouted, "I want! to SEE! MOMMY KILL GRANDMA!" clearly expressing his childish and enthusiastic personality. However, Scarlet was unaware that SkyWings can fly at a very young age, because she "avoids dragonets like the plague," and after he sang a song about his mother, Ruby, he managed to fly off the pillar and get to where his mother was being held while Peril was not watching. When they captured him, they put him on a stone pillar because he claimed he could not fly very well. She used him as a bargaining chip against Ruby. As an enthusiastic, confident SkyWing prince, he hates being called ordinary, and he thinks being lonely would be better than being ordinary, the opposite of Peril's view on the subject. When he grows up, he hopes to be a great singer and "friends with every dragon in Pyrrhia," summing up the majority of his personality. In Escaping Peril, he shows his SkyWing pride by composing a song, which includes a few lines about his mother and how she is a "better queen than all the rest." He appears to be very bright and a quick learner as well. He often praises her ability and kindness towards her subjects and becomes upset with those who oppose her.
He seems to care deeply about his mother, thinks great things of her, and obeys her orders relatively well, most of the time with an immense amount of enthusiasm. This attitude may have been created or heavily influenced by his mother, as she tells him that he is amazing at everything and loves him dearly. He has huge, golden-orange eyes that are almost the color of goldfish, and according to Peril they are prettier than Scarlet's yellow eyes.
